Energies: Highlights | May 2015

[EN] Prices for crude oil have stopped their short amendment and have continued their uptrend. With an average return of 8.1% (Brent) and 11.2% (WTI) prices went up to 56.81 EUR (Brent) and 50.42 EUR (WTI) in April, reaching 60.52 EUR (Brent) and 53.67 EUR (WTI) in early May.
On the one hand this is due to lower supply prospects, especially in the USA. The long term price fall in the last year had forced a lot of producers to noticeably narrow their production or even exit their business. The U.S. energy agency EIA now announced that U.S. crude oil production will keep on reducing even below nine million barrel a day. However the oil cartel OPEC keeps on increasing its output to record highs in order to gain market power. This is why experts also assume that the current price is largely a result of speculators and could become subject to a considerable correction in the near future.
At the same time natural gas prices in the U.S. as well as in the EU report price declines, which is mainly due to seasonally weak demand. This article shows you the latest price developments and relevant key figures for energies.

Taking the past 12 months into account, we have observed  price declines for all our energies analysed. In particular natural gas U.S. (-34.6%) and crude oil WTI (-30.1%) have fallen most intensive. However  crude oil Brent (-27.1%) and natural gas EU (-12.1%) have declined clearly as well.

During the last month, WTI (+18.4%) and Brent (+14.7%) have increased noticeably. At the same time both natural gas markets in the EU (-10.3%) and U.S. (-0.5%) report a price decrease although they are not correlated. The highest price movements are now registered in the market for WTI crude oil with an annualized volatility of 41.8% in April.
